About

The Finance Student is a business and finance publication written for students, by students. We cover the money news, campus stories and hiring cycles that actually affect people working through a commerce, finance, accounting or economics degree — city by city, starting in Ottawa.

Our mission

Finance media is written for people who already work in finance. Student media rarely touches money at all. The gap between them is where the genuinely useful information sits: which firms are taking interns this term, what a licensing change means for a second-year student, how OSAP actually pays out, which local event is worth crossing the city for.

Our mission is to close that gap. Learn, connect, get hired — in that order. Every piece we publish should do at least one of three things: teach a student something concrete, put them in a room with someone worth meeting, or point them at a role they can apply to today.

How the site works

What we cover

• New Hirings: internships, co-op terms, campus programs and entry-level roles at banks, accounting firms, wealth managers and public institutions
• Career: how the recruiting cycles run, what interviews look like, which designations matter and when to start them
• Events: business events, networking nights and case competitions worth putting in your calendar
• Student Life: OSAP and funding, credit cards, campus clubs, tuition and program changes
• Markets, explained plainly: the news that matters to a student budget or a first job, without the jargon

Why it is built city by city

A co-op posting in Ottawa is useless to a student in Hamilton, and a networking night is only worth reading about if you can actually show up. So the site is split by city rather than by topic. Ottawa is live now, with Toronto and Hamilton sections built and waiting for their first local coverage. Guides that apply everywhere are written once and appear in all of them.

How we work

• Every job on a New Hirings board links straight to the employer’s own posting, and the title, location, type and closing date are taken from that posting — not guessed
• Roles that demand years of experience or an existing licence do not belong on a student board, so they are left off
• Sponsored or affiliate content is labelled as such, in the piece itself
• We correct mistakes in the open rather than quietly deleting them
• Nothing here sits behind a paywall, and applying is always free

What we are not

We are not an investment advice service. We explain how markets, products and pay work, but we will not tell you what to buy or manage money for you. We are not a recruiter or an agency either — we do not take a cut of anyone’s hiring, and we never charge a student to apply for anything.

Who writes it

Students and recent graduates, paid through a revenue share on the work they publish. If you can explain a co-op process, a licensing change or a campus money problem clearly, the byline is yours.
