Strive Networking is bringing its General Business Networking night back to The Laff on Wednesday, September 16, and it is deliberately built as a multi-industry room. Consultants, analysts, bankers, software engineers and founders all get pointed at the same bar on York Street, which makes it one of the easier evenings in Ottawa to practise talking to people outside your program.

What the room looks like
Because it is pitched at both newcomers and people who have been in their field for years, the crowd tends to be mixed in seniority as well as sector. Expect backgrounds spanning finance, tech, real estate, healthcare and the arts. For a student, the useful part is not collecting contacts in your own niche but hearing how people in adjacent industries describe their work, which is exactly the vocabulary that shows up in interviews.
Going in prepared
Bring business cards if you have them, arrive closer to 6:00 p.m. than 7:30 p.m. if you want real conversations, and pick two or three people to follow up with properly instead of trying to work the whole room. The Laff sits at the edge of the ByWard Market, a short walk from the Rideau O-Train station. One thing worth knowing before you buy: the organiser notes that attending means agreeing to photos and video from the night being used to promote future events.
